Initial Situation

Much history – little future

During the Cultural Revolution, an elongated mountain range in Hunan Province was developed as a tea-growing region producing the highest quality product. The particular climatic conditions of the uplands of Hunan Province turned Dongshanfeng into a well-known tea-growing region.

Today, the area boasts unspoilt nature and beautiful scenery. Thanks to its elevated position and climate, it is a popular retreat during the 6 month hot season experienced in Southern China each year.

Approach

From Tea-Growing Region to Tourism

Generis AG was commissioned to develop a concept for the region, identifying development potential and tourism offers. Analysis clearly showed the region’s pleasant climate represented an attractive tourist proposition for stressed city-dwellers, plagued by heat for several months of the year.

Drawing on its experience of advising Swiss tourist destinations on tourism development, Generis AG presented a concept which preserved and enhanced nature in the region, retained the identity of the local population and provided business development opportunities based on existing resources.

A master plan for the future

Thanks to the multiple strands woven together in the development of the concept, including the prominence of environmental sustainability, consideration of the local population and the economic potential to be realised, the Party Secretary of the City of Changde and all branches of the local administration involved were convinced the concept should be taken forward.

The concept planning helped the Province at the next stage in the process by providing the basis for attracting investors and further developing the tourism offer in the Dongshanfeng region.
