Wangping Eco Recreation Village Beijing
Local recreation area for Peking’s urban population
Initial Situation
Repurposing a former coal-mining area
For decades, coal for the capital was mined in the area around Peking. Now, the coal mines have closed and the areas’ economic prowess has declined. As a result, the area is searching for new, sustainable sectors to create revenues and jobs.
The attractive scenery and proximity to the metropolis of Peking are ideal conditions for the development of a local recreation area.
Project Profile
km2 area
minutes driving time from Beijing
Approach
Renaturalising & Preserving
Building on that foundation, Generis developed an overall concept. This transformed the industrial heritage into a USP for the region, representing a unique point of difference and setting the area aside from several other local recreation areas.
This USP was complemented by the addition of Swissness in order to support perceptions of quality and to underpin the new orientation towards tourism.
Achievements
Permission to Proceed with Repurposing
The distinctive concept for the former coal-mining region, developed by Generis AG, convinced the authorities. Key factors were the consideration given to sustainability and the environment, to the local population and to the economic benefit which could be achieved.
The client received government approval to proceed with repurposing of the former brownfield sites and the construction of accommodation.
