26 new international businesses arrived in past year – another successful year

April 10, 2019

In 2018, the Economic Promotion Team of the Canton of Schaffhausen supported four more businesses than in 2017 to establish operations in the locality. The Economic Promotion Team is part of specialist consultancy, Generis AG, which was awarded a contract to lead and manage the economic development of the Canton in 1997, and has established an impressive track-record of success since then, with the 2018 results the latest evidence of the Team’s impact.

The Economic Promotion Team of the Canton of Schaffhausen can once again look back on a very successful year: twelve businesses from the USA and a further twelve from Europe as well as two from China decided to establish operations in Schaffhausen and were supported through the process by the Economic Promotion Team. The excellent result surpasses the number of businesses which moved to the Canton in the previous year (there were 22 new arrivals in 2017). That outcome is all the more impressive when the increasing competition to attract international businesses is taken into account.

Christoph Schärrer, Head of the Economic Promotion Team and special advisor to the cantonal authorities, sets out that the focus of economic development activity going forward is to be even more firmly on innovation and technology in order to ensure the Canton retains its position as an attractive international business location far into the future.

The aim is to increase the benefits of combining the expertise and capabilities of well-established local companies and in-bound businesses, following the model already successfully established in fields such as Smart Mobility, Future Farming, e-Government and Cyber Protection. The Economic Promotion Team of the Canton of Schaffhausen was first launched in 1997 as part of a programme to tackle the crisis triggered by a decline in traditional manufacturing industries. Generis AG was awarded a contract to lead and manage economic development activity on behalf of the Canton and its founder, Thomas Holenstein, was appointed as Head of Economic Development and a special Delegate to the Cantonal authorities. Since then, Generis has twice been re-appointed, in open competition, to the economic development role based on its impressive track-record in transforming the economic profile and success of the Canton.
