Winter Olympics in Beijing 2022

Developing the overall concept for the Nordic Cluster

Initial Situation

2022 Olympics: Sustainable Development

At the start of 2017, Generis was approached via the Swiss Embassy in Beijing about taking part in a competition for ideas relating to the Winter Olympics in 2022. The client was seeking an overall concept for the Nordic Cluster – comprising biathlon, cross country and ski jumping.

Beyond this, the client also wanted a spatial concept detailing how the host region could benefit from the infrastructure used for the Olympics in the long term and how it could sustainably develop into a popular tourist destination.

Approach

Multidisciplinary Working Group

To address the requirement, Generis assembled a consortium of architects, spatial planners, engineers and regional development specialists which worked together to collaboratively develop an overall concept. The team worked across two time zones between Switzerland and China in order to complete the work within the very short timescale of just three months.

The outcome was presented to the Olympic Committee as a Master Plan in the form of a book, along with scale models and a 6 minute project film.

Achievements

Overall Concept, Calculations, Models

The Working Group presented the Master Plan to the Olympic Committee in the form of a book, which detailed the concept and illustrated it with architectural drawings. The radical planning concept was based around a main building in the shape of ring, bringing together key functions and referencing the Olympic rings.

Alongside the design for the three venues for the Nordic disciplines, the Working Group produced a security plan and concepts for other fundamental elements such as artificial snow, visitor flows and traffic. The concept was received with enthusiasm and is now being partially implemented.
