Supporting drone technology development in Schaffhausen
November 9, 2019
Switzerland is one of the world’s leading nations in the field of drone technology. As part of its economic development remit in the Canton of Schaffhausen, Generis AG is positioning the Canton as a hotspot for innovative companies working on drone technology.
There are many business in Switzerland which are involved in the development and application of drones. One of the constraints is the lack of opportunity to test the technology in a full-scale, live environment. Generis recognised this shortcoming and, as part of its economic development brief, explored options to address this with the authorities in the Canton of Schaffhausen.
Generis brought together several stakeholders, including the operator of a small airfield in the Canton and members of the Canton’s Executive to create a designated space in which drones can operate and be put through their paces. The process also included discussion with federal authorities, following which Generis initiated contact with potential client businesses to outline the opportunity to them.
The move led to the Canton of Schaffhausen being invited to present the new development at the annual Swiss Innovation Week, with this year’s theme «Home of Drones», which was organised by the Swiss Embassy in Peking. Generis Partner Marco Jaggi took the opportunity to meet with high-ranking representatives of technology companies from China and Switzerland, members of the academic research community and regulatory authorities in order to shape the potential further development of this landmark innovation.
