Regional & Location Development Bureau

Regional & Location Development for Canton of Schaffhausen

Initial Situation

Location Promotion – a Model of Success

Since 2008, the Regional & Location Development Bureau of the Canton of Schaffhausen has been working to strengthen the competitiveness and innovative capability within the Canton by supporting and funding a range of initiatives, programmes and projects. Generis AG was commissioned to manage the Bureau to achieve these aims.

Using a single source for the operational management of the Bureau and for the economic promotion of the Canton has ensured the Canton benefits from close alignment across these strategic priorities.

Approach

Support, networking, development

The Regional & Location Development Bureau helps project sponsors to submit their proposals. The Bureau is the first point of contact for anyone seeking to launch a project, with support available at the ideation stage, including assessment of the risks and benefits of the proposal, help in establishing contact with potential collaborators and advice when submitting the funding application.

The role of the Regional & Location Development Bureau also includes drafting the cantonal Implementation Programme for the national government’s New Regional Policy (NRP).

Achievements

Bureau turns projects into successes

Since legislation establishing the Regional & Location Development Bureau passed in September 2008, more than 80 projects have been supported and successfully implemented. The projects vary considerably in their focus, size, sponsors, duration etc. The track-record of well-known projects includes the Swiss Transit Lab, Smilestones, the go tec! Lab, Stars in Town and die International School Schaffhausen.

A striking feature of the implementation of the NRP in the Canton of Schaffhausen is the average 60% contribution which comes from the private sector, making it one of the most cost-effective programmes in the whole of Switzerland.
