Development and Design Concept for the Village Center of Engelberg
A shared vision for the development of the village center
Project
Monastery, spa gardens, mountain railways, panoramic views: Engelberg is rich in attractions. Cable cars run in every direction, yet the village centre itself long remained little more than a transit point. Time to make the heart of the village a destination in its own right.
Through a participatory planning process, Generis brought together a wide range of stakeholders, involving local residents, businesses, visitors and authorities alike. Drawing on these insights, Generis structured the village centre into five clearly defined zones — each capable of evolving independently yet interconnected as a whole. The result is a design concept that creates value by weaving together living, working, shopping, experience and recreation.
The railway station becomes a vibrant entrance, the main street a promenade, parks become oases, and squares become places for exchange and encounter. With clear visitor guidance and optimised traffic flows, Engelberg gains a centre that provides orientation, strengthens the region’s identity and opens up new tourism perspectives. All measures are brought together into a coherent overall vision, laying the foundation for a promising development over the next 20 to 30 years.
