Project for waste heat utilization

for the Canton of Schaffhausen

From data to heat – Sustainable energy for an entire Region

Project

In Beringen, STACK Infrastructure is building a new data center with a capacity of 36 MW. Cooling generates a large amount of waste heat, of which up to 10 MW can be reused. However, in the immediate vicinity of the data center, there are not enough consumers. The solution therefore had to extend beyond the municipal boundaries.

On behalf of the Canton of Schaffhausen, generis supported the preliminary project – from assembling the project team to presenting the final report. Together with Renercon, the Cooperative for Renewable Energy, and other specialist bodies, a concept was developed for an innovative energy system: the waste heat is raised to a usable temperature, stored seasonally in a ground basin storage facility, and in the future will be supplied via a distribution network to Beringen and Schaffhausen.

Generis coordinated collaboration with cantonal authorities, connected regional stakeholders, initiated clarification of the necessary framework conditions, and advised the project group. The completed preliminary project delivered a structured assessment as well as concrete recommendations for action, paving the way for the waste heat from the data center to be used as a valuable energy source for the region.

Overcome uncertainty, achieve impact.
